My Story

I became a celebrant to officiate my sister’s wedding. When she first got engaged my sister wanted me to be a part of the ceremony but didn’t want me to feel uncomfortable in a traditionally gendered role. I joked, offhandedly, that I could be the celebrant for the ceremony and after a bit of a laugh she and her fiancé thought it would be a great idea!

After many months of training (stretching my graphic design and creative writing skills to their limits) and a good deal of bureaucracy - we were able to put together a stunning ceremony which my sister and her husband still fondly remember. Throughout the process I felt challenged and fulfilled and I realised that this is something I could do for other couples, to craft fond memories and help them make their wedding the best day of their lives. And so Bluejay Celebrant was born!

From my first debating class in Year 3 I have had a wide variety of experiences with public speaking. I took part in school plays, participated in student government and even at one point entered a poetry reading competition. However, the bulk of my experience comes from two very different activities.

In High School I was a part of the FIRST Robotics Competition team and for three years I worked with the Outreach Team to encourage young people into STEM and gather sponsorship for the team. More recently, I have employed my presentation skills to my hobbies – namely, table-top roleplaying games where I often am the one leading the game and setting the story (the games master/dungeon master).

As well as playing RPGs my hobbies include board games, card games (Magic the Gathering and Disney’s Lorcana), crafting of all kinds, reading, video games, drinking tea and yoga. I love spending time with friends and family, traveling and trying new experiences, and relaxing at home with one of many ongoing craft projects and a cup of tea.

Growing up my family moved a lot and I was able to experience living in strange and exotic places, including a rural town in Western Australia, a suburb outside of Toronto, Canada and a village in Switzerland.

At university I studied architecture and have attended university in Canada, Sweden and Australia (all in English. Sadly, my foreign language skills are limited to ordering tea and cakes at cafes). I loved university because I got to learn new things constantly, every day, to the point where I decided eight years was not enough and I am planning a PhD studying Queer influences on Architecture.

As a queer non-binary person myself, this topic is very near and dear to my heart, and I firmly believe architectural theory needs to catch up to the times and acknowledge the contributions queer culture has had on design trends and practices.

Why am I including these seemingly irrelevant details on my website? I am hoping that through getting to know me and my story better, you will feel more confident in choosing a celebrant who matches your vibes and personality. While during the ceremony a celebrant acts as the removed narrator, with a script and presentation chosen by the couple, over the months before the ceremony we would be working together on the paperwork, ceremony details and script planning.

You want to choose someone you get along with, who can listen and understand your story and values, and who can bring these key parts of your relationship to life to share with your loved ones on your wedding day. If you think I could be that person for you, please get in touch!
